Empire Day was celebrated on the 24th May, Queen Victoria's birthday. The first Empire Day was held in 1902 and it continued to be celebrated until the late 1950's. It was intended to celebrate the British Empire. Children were allowed to leave school early so that they could take part in other festivities such as may-pole dancing. Mr Stuart Orpwood donated this picture to Brent Museum and his sister is fourth from the left in the front row.
