Toasters of this particular type were known as ?turn-over? toasters, as opening the doors would cause the bread to drop down so that the un-toasted side faced the heating element when the doors were closed again. Toasters such as these were not automatic and so had to be monitored constantly at the breakfast table. They were later replaced by ?pop-up? toasters in the late 1950's.
